Student Goal Setting

In Education Week Teacher, Dr. Sanee Bell explains, " Through goal setting, students become owners of their own learning. Many teachers would agree that having students involved in planning for their own learning increases student engagement and achievement. Goal setting template sheets can help simplify this process.  Goal sheets are available in Math, Reading, and Writing for grades K-5. How do you implement them? Let's see what that would look like.
Introduction:
Initially, the teacher and students would discuss expectations and what their goals are for the school year. Most of the time, it's best to have a brief conference and then have the student independently color/check the appropriate box. If you are crunched for time- place a dot on the boxes and the student can complete coloring on their own. Be sure and followup/give feedback whenever possible. Some steps on the goal sheets may be able to be completed in small groups or as a whole class.
The student and teacher would need to conference and set a goal for reading. Students would need to know what reading level they were presently at and what a reasonable expectation is for them to achieve by the next  goal session or assessment.  Below is an example of a 2nd grade sheet. the student will set a goal and a deadline. The student can color in each reading level as it is achieved. additionally, there are related common core standards he/she can check off as they are mastered.

Writing goal sheets are designed to accompany your units of study. The common core writing standards are written on the goal sheet itself. There is a key on the bottom right hand corner. Students can color in the appropriate standard according to the level of mastery indicated on the key:
GREEN= I can teach this to others.
BLUE= I can do this well
YELLOW= I can do this with help/more practice
It's recommended, especially in lower grades, to do this in small groups with teacher supervision. Students can be grouped to meet with you according to their level of mastery. Alternatively, for more advanced students you can "dot" the appropriate box with the appropriate color for students to color and then follow up later as you circulate to each group. An example of a K worksheet follows.

Upper grade goal sheets are also designed to accompany your units of study. Each common core writing standard is written on 2 separate sheets. Prior to each unit of study, as a class, students can highlight the standards included in that unit. as standards are met, or at the close of the unit, students can locate the standard on the web and color it. The key on the top right can indicate level of mastery. Students or the teacher (if you want it more uniform), can choose what color represents each level of mastery:
____ I can teach this.
____ I can do this.
____ I can do this with help.
An example of 3rd grade goal sheets are below:

In K-2, the math goal sheets are similar to writing. The common core math standards are written on the goal sheet itself. There is a key on the bottom right hand corner. Students can color in the appropriate standard according to the level of mastery indicated on the key:
GREEN= I can teach this to others.
BLUE= I can do this well
YELLOW= I can do this with help/more practice

By utilizing SMART Goal Sheets with your students you can give them ownership of their learning and increase student engagement. They are available separately or in bundles.
